Two Cuba-Destined Relief Sailboats Reported Missing subsequent to Departing Mexico.
A large-scale search and rescue mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for a pair of unlocated sailboats carrying relief goods journeying from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Maritime Search Efforts Launched
Mexico has deployed naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the missing boats, which were had on board no fewer than nine sailors, as stated by a military release.
The boats had been scheduled to arrive in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.
Background of Humanitarian Support to Cuba
Cuba has relied heavily on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the nation endures repeated nationwide blackouts.
"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and both vessels are outfitted with appropriate navigational gear and communication devices," an official for the convoy said.
The nine individuals on board are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.
Recent Relief Mission
Just days before, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and officially received another boat that had transported 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the country.
That ship, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the yacht in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar equipment, medicines, formula milk, bikes and food.
Wider International Backdrop
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba since January, when a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation was initiated.
International organizations have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with in excess of fifty thousand surgical procedures postponed in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Political measures have intensified lately, with comments from various representatives emphasizing the complicated state of diplomatic ties.
In response to recent proposals, a prominent official from Cuba declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their current progress remains not publicly known.
The maritime authorities stated it was committed to using all of the resources at its reach to find the sailboats and ensure the well-being of the sailors.
As of now, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
