The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.

While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.

“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future without fear.”

The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.

The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.

A Future Secured

The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.

“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to kick off the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.

“It represents the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”

Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
