The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Become a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new initialism emerged several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to medical experts like paediatricians. Typically, it is rare for doctors to treat a young patient who has lost their entire family. However, there has been nothing “normal” about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal in numerous doctors returning from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are continuing. Authorities disputes these accusations, just as it disavows all charges it is implicated in. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, apparently, is what global togetherness resembles.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A contest that was originally built on peace has devolved into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
