Stupidity and Monarchical Hubris Sunk Andrew, and It May Not Be Over Yet

This episode commenced with a single photograph, perhaps the most impactful ever snapped of a royal family member.

Present was the Baron Killyleagh, standing closely beside a teenage girl, while a companion smiled suggestively in the rear.

Without that image, captured at a social event in 2001, few would have credited the allegations of a young woman who stated she was trafficked across the Atlantic and obliged to have cursory sexual encounters with a individual of the royal bloodline?

An odd, indicative gesture by someone who had publicly claimed to have never been aware of her, asserted he could never have had sex with her, and yet provided millions of monarchical money to settle a long-delayed court action.

Years of Scandal

Against this backdrop, discussions of the royals acting decisively to distance themselves from Andrew are misguided. This controversy has endured for the largest portion of 15 years since that picture, and another image of Andrew ambling pleasantly with a convicted sex offender surfaced.

  • Arrogance: How long did his family members, possibly even his parents, understand that Andrew was so presumptuous?
  • Questionable Associations: They must have realized, if his employees and the police were fulfilling their roles, that he had some extremely unsavory associates given he openly hosted them to palaces.
  • Financial Extravagance: If the family did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his extravagance with state resources.

Travel were documented in public records: private aircraft flights from the royal residence to a sporting venue and back again in time for dining, exclusive air travel instead of scheduled services, all for the benefit of "Airmiles Andy".

Existence of Entitlement

Additionally the arrogance which required deference when he appeared in a space or the supreme consciousness about his royal titles used on his correspondence in letters to his personal acquaintances.

He avoided accountability while his parent, who inexplicably pampered him, was still living. The monarch did at least remove him of public duties and honorary colonelcies in the consequence of his disastrous and, it is now clear, deceptive television interview six years ago.

Recent Developments

Merely in the last fortnight that events progressed rapidly, following the release of biographical works giving more disturbing details of his conduct and that of his companions.

Further disclosures have again revealed Andrew's assumption that he could get away with lying about his interaction with a notorious figure.

The public (and the media) were far ahead of the royals. There was not a single person of any significance to speak up for him, a result of all those years of hubris.

Royal Worries

The more astute royals understood that. The primary concern is to transfer the crown, if not as before at least complete and untarnished.

Over time the last 190 years trying to overcome the reputation of earlier rulers, showing they are beneficial, accountable and reactive to their citizens.

His actions endangered all that in danger in an age when deference and secrecy is no longer adequate.

Aftermath

Ultimately, the well-known uncertain king was pressured additional. There was no other option. The royal household had relinquished authority of the account.

Currently the removal of designations and the persistent and life-long public humiliation that will afflict Andrew most deeply.

  • Downgrading: Demoted to just a commoner
  • Historical Precedent: The primary royal to forfeit his designations in modern times
  • Military Service: Notably stinging given his duty in the conflict

He is still a constitutional officer, theoretically able to substitute for the sovereign, and he is still in the succession to the throne, but none of these will ever come to pass.

What Lies Ahead

Do individuals he encounters still acknowledge him? Will they still slip up and call him Your Highness? Would they say Andrew,

Of course, he is not moving to a common area, but to the royal family's large property at Sandringham.

At that location, he will be provided by the sovereign with one of the estate properties and given some type of private allowance.

This differs from his former home, where he paid a nominal rent for more than 20 years, and Norfolk is a bit far, but even so it may not be sufficiently removed.

Pending Matters

The situation continues. There are still files in the custody of American legislators to be revealed.

  • Parliamentary Interest: Will parliament seek further action
  • Financial Investigation: Or investigate the waste of public money
  • Judicial Potential: There may even be a criminal probe into his actions

Perhaps for the present the reputational impact to the institution is contained. The narrative from the institution was evidently that the stripping of designations was what the sovereign, and notably other senior monarchical figures, desired.

Changed Stance

An end to illusion that Andrew was doing it voluntarily. And, remarkably, the short announcement showed evidently that the monarchy were siding with the complainant's version of occurrences.

Additionally, for the initial instance they ultimately showed consideration for the affected individuals: "The measures are considered essential, despite the reality that he continues to deny the claims against him."

In the end it is arrogance, self-interest and indolence that will kill the monarchy. In his folly, self-indulgence and corruption, Andrew appears never to have understood that lesson.
