PSG Defeats Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Super Cup in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on fourteen different times.

The Parisian giants required a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match between the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring early on.

However, the southern French side fired two times late to take a shock advantage. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial leveler in the final seconds to send the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all scored successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing shootout victory.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the past 13 seasons.
