Line of Duty Confirmed for Seventh Series on BBC
The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-episode series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.
Fresh Obstacles for The Team
Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."
New Character and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.
However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.
In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.
Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
Show History
Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no intentions for further series.
However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
