RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
