Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities issued surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
