Israelis commemorate second anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace talks advance
People have assembled around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The incident resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership delayed official commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A senior representative familiar with the negotiations revealed that an late session of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official said the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "challenging and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Critical Issues in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The trade of the prisoners still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future governance of the territory
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member endured the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere appears as home now and until every captive return none of us will feel safe."
"When we see all home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can commence recover," she added.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel reports 48 continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman stated: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be protected."
Research now consistently show that about seventy percent of the population prefer the war to end in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the area of the gathering, mourners assembled to pay their respects.
From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side district, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"As the night arrives, the dread arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"We are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, especially my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the war will return to us."
Medical Emergency
The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of that area indicated additional fatalities had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while seeking help to the south, health workers stated.
