Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
