I thought I edged it - Carey on overturned decision.

Australian gloveman Alex Carey stated he believed he had feathered the ball when he was given not out on Decision Review System during day one of the third Ashes Test against the English.

Having been given a life on 72, Carey proceeded to score a fine 106 to help the Australians reach 326-8 at the close in the Adelaide Oval.

What happened?

Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey went for a cut to the bowling of Josh Tongue.

The England team lodged a strong appeal, certain they had heard an edge, but on-field official Ahsan Raza was unmoved.

Following captain Ben Stokes challenged the on-field call, the replay examined by third umpire Chris Gaffaney showed a spike but this came before the ball had reached the bat.

Gaffaney also said he believed there was a space between the bat and the ball.

As a result, Carey was allowed to continue.

"There was a sound, I thought I'd nicked it," stated Carey.

"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."

Technology Debate

Questions have been raised about 'the sound wave technology' during the series after a number of dubious incidents.

England's bowling coach David Saker suggested England may pursue this most recent incident to a higher level with the match official Jeff Crowe.

"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker remarked.

"It's been a worry for us all series long. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. It is what it is."

Personal Milestone

His hundred was his first in Test cricket against England.

It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose dad died in September. His spouse was emotional in the crowd as the batsman marked the occasion by glancing upward.

"A hundred on home soil with loved ones present is unforgettable," said Carey.

"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm trying not to tear up. It was truly wonderful."

Previous Ashes Drama

Carey has been at the centre of Ashes debate before.

He was the keeper who notoriously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 series, resulting in a heated final day.

Speaking about his survival he continued: "The technology clearly wasn't synchronized. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."

"Maybe it went my way."
