Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
