England and Wales Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by sporting legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts will face off in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Other Notable Pool Draws

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in France, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks before the final, assuming the South Africans win their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the groups play out according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
