Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after former President Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and stated they should be arrested and penalized "with execution" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Message That Provoked the Controversy
The clip, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who previously served in defense or defense positions.
"Similar to us, you all took an pledge to safeguard and support this constitution," the officials stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution are not only from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you have to decline improper directives. No one has to follow commands that break the legal system or our national charter."
The Former President's Incensed Response
The clip seemed to trigger a heated reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives React
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats released a unified declaration denouncing the remarks.
"Political violence has no place in America," they stated. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all served our United States with tremendous loyalty and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's appalling and risky death threats against congressional representatives, and call on House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged digital publications and recant his violent language before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.
Lawmakers' Strong Response
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a response.
"We are veterans and security experts who love this country and made an pledge to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they declared. "That oath is permanent, and we aim to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that fundamental duty."
"What's most telling is that the president considers it punishable by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the constitution and obligation to follow only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "Every American must come together and condemn the former president's calls for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
More Governmental Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is requesting the capital punishment of government members."
He continued: "This represents an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very risky, you have leading members of Congress instructing troops to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in American history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of treason" but that "lawyers have to parse the wording and establish all that."
Administration Reaction
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the official declared. "There are current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to members of the US military, to current military personnel urging them to defy the commander in chief's proper directives."
She said: "The integrity of our military rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are basically supporting."
