Chornobyl Disaster Shelter Can No Longer Effectively Blocks Radiation, Requires Major Restoration – International Atomic Energy Agency
The protective shield covering the Chornobyl nuclear reactor within Ukraine has lost its primary safety function of blocking radiation, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This loss of function comes after a drone strike in February that caused significant damage in the structure.
Damage from Aerial Attack Degrades Containment System
An attack by an unmanned aerial vehicle in February caused a breach in the so-called “new safe confinement” arch. This enormous protective structure, built at a cost of €1.5bn with work finishing in 2019, was designed to contain radiation for decades. A recent IAEA assessment mission found that the drone impact had weakened the structural integrity of the steel arch.
The [protective structure] had lost its primary safety functions, including the confinement capability, said IAEA head Rafael Grossi. Grossi noted that inspectors found no permanent damage to key support structures or sensor systems.
Background Context of the Chernobyl Shelter
The original 1986 explosion at Chornobyl – which occurred when Ukraine was a republic within the Soviet Union – spewed radiation over much of Europe. In a hurried containment effort, Soviet engineers built a concrete shelter over the damaged reactor, but it had a three-decade design life. The new confinement was constructed to allow for the eventual decommissioning of the original structure, the destroyed reactor hall, and the melted nuclear fuel itself.
Present Status and Required Actions
While some repair work has been done, the IAEA stressed that a full-scale repair effort is absolutely necessary. This is required to stop additional deterioration and to ensure long-term nuclear safety. Officials in Ukraine had stated that a drone carrying a powerful explosive hit the plant, causing a fire and damaging the outer shielding.
