British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
