At least thirteen people killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
