Back in the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to book a place to stay when I arrived, but upon reaching the city, a large conference was in town and all the budget hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of bed down in the terminal – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open 24 hours. Unsure of what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded public transport and started wandering in the direction of the casino, reasoning I might spend those hours somewhere that was open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me at my peak for acing a crucial interview the following day, but as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.

I must have looked confused because a female student saw me loitering in the city center and wondered if everything was alright. I shared my situation and immediately she said I could crash on the ground in her student dorm at the local university – which was perfect, as that’s where my interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided a meal: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her work shift. I was able to use a hot shower and a secure location to rest to spend the night.

In retrospect, I can appreciate what a big chance she took as a young woman inviting a male stranger she’d just met sleep on her floor. In those days I operated under my own unawareness and did not consider to the potential danger. As a dad now, I’m amazed she offered that help – and remain very grateful.

Ultimately, I did not attending ANU, and I never saw her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of kindness. My sincere desire is that karma has returned her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more folks with such compassion.
